Subject:   A Bit Of Naval History - - - THAT YOU NEVER KNEW!!!

COLD ENOUGH TO FREEZE THE BALLS OFF A BRASS MONKEY

On old war ships it was necessary to keep a good supply of cannon balls near the cannon. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck was a big problem.

The best storage method devised was to stack them as a square based pyramid, with one ball on top, resting on four, resting on nine, which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon.

There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/ rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate with 16 round indentations, called a Monkey. But if this plate were made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make Monkeys from brass.

Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would be pushed right off the Monkey.

When this happened, it was quite literally, cold enough to FREEZE THE BALLS OFF A BRASS MONKEY!!!

----- And all this time, you thought that was a vulgar expression, didn't you?

I am now either much more educated, or have a great bar story.  Not really sure which.

About Misguided Indiana Appoligists
In a reply to '''Kelvin Sampson & NCAA Violations''', Josh writes: ''You're right, Sampson's violations are not severe. '' Josh, this is not going to become true just because you say it over and over. Nate0 has been playing this record for months, but '''it is still untrue'''. I will lift this paragraph from my thread titled '''Coaches and Violations:''' Really, is it so hard to understand that '''no violation is secondary when you're on probation''' -- that is the definition of probation. The non-secondary ('''major''') violations at OU included "Fostering an atmosphere of non-compliance." That doesn't mean he failed to keep everyone else from doing bad -- it means ''he encouraged (required?) them to go on cheating''. [This finding was agreed to by both the school and the coach. They admitted to both the cheating and the atmosphere in which it occurred.] In the newly released summary of violations (pertaining to activities on behalf of IU), the phrase is softened to "Failing to maintain an atmosphere of compliance." Still '''not a secondary violation'''. The NCAA document in fact accuses your poor martyr of repeated, willful, arrogant conduct. The NCAA regulations on recruiting are not a pick-and-choose menu which leaves a coach the option of selecting which ones he will follow and which ones will be surreptitiously ignored. The amateurish attempts to mask the violations confirm awareness that the conduct was outside the stipulations of probation. '''If I were trying to champion a program's integrity, I wouldn't start by crying, "We only cheat a little bit," when that itself is a blatant lie. When you climb on your white horse, make sure you are facing the front.''' The longer you keep trying to justify/minimize these events, the longer you will have to deal with the fact that they '''did''' occur. Admit what happened. Deal with it. Move on.
